Sedation & Nitrous Oxide

At Kidz-R-Kool Pediatric Dentistry, Dr. Morghan and Dr. Fatima understand that some children may feel anxious about dental visits. To help create a more comfortable experience, we offer safe and effective sedation options designed specifically for children.

Our goal is to help your child feel relaxed while receiving the care they need.

What Is Nitrous Oxide Sedation?

Nitrous oxide sedation, commonly known as pediatric laughing gas, is one of the most widely used methods to help children relax during dental treatment. It is often recommended for children who need smaller amounts of dental work.

Nitrous oxide is a combination of oxygen and nitrous oxide gas, delivered through a small mask placed over your child’s nose. This allows your child to relax while remaining fully awake and responsive.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes nitrous oxide as a safe and effective option for treating children.

How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?

Nitrous oxide works quickly and gently to help your child feel calm during treatment.

  • Your child will remain fully conscious
  • Natural reflexes are maintained
  • The gas is mild, non-addictive, and easily eliminated through normal breathing
  • Effects wear off quickly after the procedure

Once the appointment is complete, your child can return to normal daily activities.

What Does Nitrous Oxide Feel Like?

Children may experience different sensations while receiving nitrous oxide sedation, including:

  • A warm, relaxed feeling
  • Lightheadedness
  • A floating or tingling sensation in the arms or legs
  • Mild sleepiness
  • A giggly or “funny” feeling

If your child feels any discomfort, the level of sedation can be adjusted at any time, and the effects can be quickly reversed.

What Is IV Sedation?

In certain situations, IV sedation may be recommended. This option is helpful for children with higher levels of anxiety or for more involved dental procedures.

With IV sedation:

  • The doctor can adjust the level of sedation based on your child’s needs
  • Your child may be in a moderate or deeper state of relaxation
  • Your child may respond to touch or verbal cues but will not remember the procedure

What Are The Benefits Of IV Sedation?

IV sedation offers several advantages, including:

  • Reduced treatment time
  • A calm and relaxed experience during treatment
  • Minimal memory of the procedure
  • Fast recovery after treatment

This option allows the dental team to complete care efficiently while keeping your child comfortable.
